The nineteenth dynasty was part of the New Kingdom in Egypt and was the nineteenth overall family to rule the Egyptian lands. Ramses I was the first pharaoh in the nineteenth century followed by Ramses II's father Seti I. For about fifteen years, Seti I ruled the kingdom which involved conflicts between the Hittites and nomadic tribes like the Hebrews. Ramses II succeeded his father in 1279 and ruled for the longest period of time in the nineteenth dynasty (about 66 years). He was remembered mainly by his military and great building programs. Like his father, Ramses pursued the Hittites in battle. Since Ramses had outlived eleven of his sons, his twelfth, Merenptah, took control of Egypt after Ramses demise. Merenptah's reign was heavily conflicted by attacks of "Sea People" who are believed to be the Arcaeans. After Merenptah's reign, Amenmesse took control as the fifth ruler of the nineteenth dynasty. Amenmesse is believed to be a illegitimate heir to the throw maybe by taking advantage of a sudden death of Merenptah. Seti II, son of Merenptah was believed to take over control from Amenmesse or rule concurrently with him. Seti II's reign is believed to be peaceful but there is not a lot of evidence of his six year rule. For the next six years, Siptah, son of Seti II, reigned but even less is known of him then his father. Also like his father, Siptah's tomb is believed to have broken into shortly after his death with the thieves erasing almost all mention of him. The last ruler of the nineteenth dynasty is the queen Tausert who is now known as the wife of Seti II. Queen Tausert was one of few queens who was actually buried in the Valley of the Kings, which was a huge privilege, but was probably moved by her son Ramses III to a different area later. The nineteenth dynasty ended with a civil war in Egypt.
