Temples & Buildings

Ramses II was remembered greatly by his military and his numerous building projects.  His first building was a palace in the new capital of Avaria with his son Seti I when he was 22.  He two main building accomplishments were Abu Simbel and the Temple of Karnak.

Abu Simbel is really two temples.  The larger of the two Ramses II built for himself, while the other one he dedicated to his favorite wife Nefertari and the goddess Hathor.

The Temple of Karnak was not solely built by Ramses II.  The temple is actually three large temples in one and was started by Ramses I.  Seti I, Ramses II's father, continued the work while Ramses II finished it.

Abydos is a small temple that was built by workers under Ramses II.  It is a small temple built near the Temple of Osiris.  It was supposedly built for Ramses II, spirit to become associated with Osiris.

The Temple of Luxor was another building by Ramses II and others before and after him.  The temple's purpose seemed to be mainly for festivals.

The Ramessuem was built early in Ramses II's reign and was built over the destroyed temple of Seti I.  The temple was unfortunately built too close to the Nile River and only a portion of it is left today.
